The smaller islands, designed as a paradigmatic example or as a metaphor for the need to conduct aimed at environmental sustainability, the rational use of resources, to the knowledge of the “limits” of actions to environmental impact, have been the inspiring element of the project “Dolphins guardians of the island. ”

Designed and produced by Marevivo since 2009, the project aims to initiate, within certain classes of primary and secondary schools of the smaller Italian islands, educational courses aimed at the formation of a group of pupils “Dolphins Guardians”, which They will have a greater awareness and responsibility in protecting the environmental resources of its territory.

The project also involves local operators which, when formed, will collaborate with educators Marevivo in environmental education activities focused on knowledge of the natural, archaeological and environmental island.

A feature of the project is to facilitate the meeting with experts, valuing the experiences of different people in various fields. The local community can participate in it with the “memory bank”, consisting of the traditions, the customs and traditions spontaneously oriented towards the social, cultural and environmental, offering didactic ideas for interdisciplinary research, evaluation, animation teaching. Transmit the culture and knowledge of local resources is crucial to promote the civic sense of belonging to the land that is one of the aims of the project.

Peculiarity of the project is also the strong involvement of local institutions (municipalities, Coast Guard, Port Authority, the State Forestry Corps, Navy), associations and economic operators in the area.

The objectives

  • Raise awareness among young people in environmental issues, making him feel the beauty and value of their territory from the point of view of nature and from the historical and archaeological sites.
  • Introduce young people to nature, helping them to perceive it as an environment in which we all belong, as well as a common good.
  • Stimulate their sense of belonging to the environment around them and their sense of civic duty, making them feel part of a community that preserves and manages important resources.
  • Help them find alternatives to the lifestyle of our society.

WHO

Are pupils of the primary schools of the islands involved that, together with their teachers, will be guided in the various stages of this project by the operators of Marevivo joined by some experts and operators of local associations, who will provide their expertise to enrich the content educational-training. We must not forget the families of students, and indirectly, will be involved in some phases of the project and on which it is hoped a positive effect; Last but not least, the authorities and institutions that will testify the importance of this operation on a social level.

At the end of the course will be organized a closing event with the presentation of certificates “Dolphins Guardians” in the presence of the authorities, of all those who took part in the project (teachers, pupils, parents, teachers, social workers, educators, experts, organizers) and Local media and presentation of a final account of the activities.

To an agreement made with the local institutions, the students who have obtained the certificate have the right to report any attacks to the environment to the Commander of the Port or the Mayor’s own island, without having to be accompanied by adults.Having defined with teachers the program of activities is passed to the implementation phase of the learning-education that provides for the conduct of outdoor activities. In particular the activities proposed, agreed, will be held once a month, for a total of about 5 times a class, in line with the school curriculum.

EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL

 It’s planned production and distribution of educational material related to the various activities carried out by students. In particular they will be distributed didactic useful as the opportunity to delve that lend themselves particularly well to be used both to meet the demand of the young students to have more specific information on particular topics, and to build, with the help of teachers, specific units learning to be included in the school curriculum of different disciplines.

From 2009 to the present we have been involved islands: Giglio, La Maddalena, Sant’Antioco, Ponza, Ventotene, Capri, Ischia, Vulcano, Lampedusa, Linosa.

For a total of about 1,000 children for every edition.

2015 will be the moment of Aeolian Islands with more than 500 children involved in this activity.
