Sea Shepherd protecting the Mediterranean sea, in collaboration with the Coast Guard and the Financial Police, shows plastic pollution caused by illicit FADs. The mission is supported by the Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund and Smilewave Fund and the artisanal fishermen of Lipari and Salina offered their collaboration.
In the Aeolian Islands, fishermen from neighbouring large-scale fleets, use up to eight hundred FADs per boat, far beyond the 20 allowed by the local ordinance, a condition that contributes to impoverish the sea and bring the small-scale fisheries sector to its knees crafts. 77 FADs and 150 kilometres of polypropylene have been recovered.
