Marine Conservation
The AIPF together with Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), is working to support sustainable fishing, restore fish stocks, reduce pollution and protect rare marine habitats and species.
A voluntary fishing ‘code of conduct’ has been developed and signed, with the fishermen of Salina and Stromboli, to promote low-impact, sustainable and responsible fishing. We are helping guide effective management measures and providing tangible infrastructure and equipment in the form of ice machines and reusable, insulated fish boxes to improve quality of fish and reduce polystyrene waste. A logo to identify the fishermen joining the initiatives has been created.
Targeted research projects to gain a deeper understanding of the Aeolian marine habitats (including posidonia) and the dynamics of the local fishery have been commissioned to the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station and to Aquastudio.
We are supporting the renovation of a rescue and rehabilitation centre for sea turtles in Filicudi with
Filicudi Wildlife Conservation. The aim is to ensure the conservation of endangered loggerhead turtles.
With the educational course “Discovery Eolie: little explorers” by
Filicudi Wildlife Conservation, the children in Filicudi and Alicudi are discovering the Aeolian wildlife and biodiversity of their islands, to learn how to protect their own land and sea. A whale made from beach plastics has been created and will be exposed at Biennale d’Arte in Filicudi next August.
“The Sea of Time” workshop for children – focusing on sea pollution, will be presented at the “
Festa di Teatro EcoLogico” i Stromboli, an art festival where the electricity is banned. The final performance will take place on 27th of June.
Landscape conservation
Dotteolie and CNR-ISAC organized a course in Lipari, to demonstrate how to build dry-stone walls that are typical of the Aeolian terraced landscape. The aim was to raise awareness of the importance of dry stone walls and terraces in protecting against hydrogeological risk, in supporting biodiversity and in improving soil fertility. The recovery and maintenance of the terraced landscape could prove to be strategically important for long-term territorial planning and for reducing the negative effects of climate change by promoting the use of traditional techniques in an integrated and sustainable way.
We supported for the second year the
FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano, in the clearing of ancient pathways and beaches in Panarea, to expose the natural beauty of the island to visitors in a sustainable way.
Improving waste management
We supported the EmergenSea educational campaign with NGO
Marevivo and have now installed the first eco-compactor for plastic bottles in the IC Santa Lucia school in Lipari,to reduce pollution and raise awareness of the benefits of recycling. Coupons are handed out to those who use the machine, as an incentive, thanks to the local business who joined the initiative.
We are supporting the “Eco Straws Campaign” by
Marevivo and the “
VerdEolie – Isole Senza Plastica” initiative to promote the use of biodegradable and compostable products in the Aeolians. Thanks to those who already joined the initiative: Bar del Porto, Bar Da Carola, Bridge Sushi Bar, Paki Bar, Banacalì and Hotel Raya in Panarea; Pizzeria Franco Manca in Salina; Il Giardino di Lipari in Lipari.

EVENTS
There was a launch event of the eco compactor attended by the local community and the mayor Marco Giorgianni.
Two events related to the Dry Stone Walls course, took place in April and were open to local citizens.
- At “The terraced landscape of the Aeolian Islands, choices for the future” Dr. Donatella Murtas (Italian Terraced Landscape Association) interviewed and Dr. Alessandra Bonazza (CNR-ISAC).
- The professors of the Course were in Panarea for a guided walk on World Earth Day and which included lunch with the locals. The project was promoted by Earth Day Italia and included between the initiatives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. It was suggested as one between the 5 most interesting initiatives of the Hearth Day by Rai News.
In May Lucio Bellomo, traveller, oceanographer and researcher, told us the incredible story of his zero impact travel through the 33 islands of our country. The event took place in Villa Libertà in Panarea. Having studied the marine currents, he fears for the future of the Mediterranean sea. “Everything floating in the Mediterranean, like plastic, stays there forever, because of the currents.”
On World Oceans Day, Salina’s restaurateurs met at Capofaro to acknowledge our sustainable fishing projects and to commit to more responsible fish purchases. Chef Ludovico De Vivo hosted a four course dinner using seasonal, local fish cooked from head to tail and sourced using sustainable fishing techniques. A guide to help consumers with responsible buying and consumpion of fish has also distributed.
Following a think tank organized in 2016 involving the international organization Oceana Europe, an event to present their research in the Aeolian Islands has been organized in Lipari. The month-long research voyage aimed at compiling footage and data from deep-sea areas. This will contribute to the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of our sea.
