The first plastic bottles recycling machine, giving coupons for plastic bottles, is in Lipari, thanks to the #EmergenSea campaign by Marevivo Italia, that we supported.
Marevivo’s project “#EmergenSea, each one of us can do something to protect the sea”, with the inauguration of the compactor machine that enables the recycling of plastic bottles, also handing out coupons automatically to those who use the machine. The campaign has been made possible with the support of Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund and Blue Marine Foundation and the cooperation with the Municipality of Lipari – Department of Environment and I.C. Lipari Santa Lucia.
On top of the machine, located in Santa Lucia school, there is a monitor showing videos of the campaign to promote “the three Rs” of waste management: reduce, recycle and reuse. It will be possible to confer the bottles to the machine from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 6 pm, and Saturday from 8:30 am to 1 pm, also on days when the school is closed, with the exception of public holidays. Coupons earned by those who contribute to the sceheme can be used in the businesses that participate in the initiative: Bar Ritrovo La Latteria; Gioielleria – Articoli da Regalo Rita Subba; Il Giardino di Lipari; Bar Papisca: La Casa Eoliana; Artesana; San Bartolo Vineria e Dispensa.
Marevivo’s campaign #EmergenSea wants to promote tangible action to make the plastic become an opportunity, not a burden. Compactor machines, in this respect, represent a valid alternative to contrast environmental degradation and to promote positive actions among the community.
«We selected the island of Lipari for the pilot project – explains Carmen di Penta, Director-General of Marevivo – providing a machine that separates and compresses plastic waste. Furthermore, we will distribute communication material and information to raise awareness among local communities on the importance of little, but decisive action to fight against the dumping of waste and the pollution of the environment».
«We are excited for promoting and offering economic support to EmergenSea project, another initiative with Marevivo, which we expect will have a strong impact on the territory. Finally we have on the Aeolian islands – explains Luca Del Bono, Chairman Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund – the first compactor machine for plastic bottles. We hope many people will participate, by putting their bottles in the machine, starting a virtuous circle. From now on, every citizen has got an instrument to make the difference and to have a positive impact on out eco-system».
The mayor of Lipari Marco Giorgianni said: «My presence wants to testify the support of the administration for an initiative that not only speaks about the environment, but also promotes practical action, which is even more important when a local school is involved. We share not only the spirit but also the timing, because it coincides with a reorganization of the waste management system that will take place in the next weeks and has the ambition of achieving high levels of recycling».
«With this initiative – declares Renato Candia, principal of the I.C. “Lipari” – promoted by Marevivo, for a while already near to our school with the “Guardian Dolphins” project, Lipari school opens, not only metaphorically, its doors to the community. We believe in the importance of this message: setting an example means, also, never stop dreaming and trying to be a better person, respecting others and the environment and recognising all their characteristics. We wish a big success for this initiative».
In Lipari in the first 3 months 50000 plastic bottles have been recycled thanks to the Marevivo initiative, to the eco-compactor that we funded in collaboration with Blue Marine Foundation and thanks to the awareness of the local community. The bottles would cover the distance of 17 km, equal to the circumnavigation of Stromboli island.
