The FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano -Young Groups of Messina and Turin, from April 23 to May 6, have been engaged on the island of Panarea for the fifth consecutive year of the “Panarea Project”.
The purpose of the project is to reopen the ancient paths of shepherds and farmers of the nineteenth century (until that time the island was fully grown up to the top of the mountain) invaded by dense vegetation and liberating the beaches of this pearl of the Mediterranean From waste; Thanks to the work carried out, it has been possible to give life to these places, making them enjoyable and enjoyable to everyone and promoting sustainable tourism respectful of the environment and its resources.
The initiative, to which students from all over Italy have joined, also uses the support of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Environmental Chemistry of the University of Messina and of the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Bologna, which will explain with Lessons on the characteristics and peculiarities of the island’s Mediterranean flora, with a focus on some autochthonous specimens present exclusively on the island of Panarea.
The project was held in Panarea because here was the first donation to the FAI, in 1977 by the lawyer Di Blasi. A land on Cala Junco, donated to avert a landing plan that would irreparably compromise the beauty of this place as we know it today.
The aim is to exploit all the resources of the island, safeguarding the precious Panarea natural and botanical heritage, a fertile land that could be cultivated once again, thanks also to the implementation of a natural and Sustainable practices.
All this was possible thanks to Mrs. Paola Motta Romagnoli (responsible for the project), to the Forest Rangers of the Region of Sicily, the main tour operators of the island, who made available their facilities and several companies that have generously offered their contribution to the project.
The Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund has joyfully supported this project and we are currently discussing the implementation of the Panarea Project and the possibility to extend it to other islands in the archipelago.
