Safeguarding Grotta del Bue Marino in Filicudi and Grotta del Cavallo in Vulcano, through eco-friendly cables and buoys, thanks to the project of the Coast Guard of Lipari and Filicudi Wildlife Conservation, with the contribution of the Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund, Blue Marine Foundation and other donors of the island of Filicudi. During summer motor boats often violate the ordinances in force which do not allow access for safety reasons (Ord. 28 2019 and Ord. 10 2020).
The sea caves represent the ideal reproductive habitat of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, an endangered marine mammal that, up to the 1960s, was present in our islands, but which is now absent due to fishing activities and anthropic disturbance. Other targeted conservation projects have allowed the repopulation of this species. Moreover, several colonies of Pallid Swift, a rare migrant bird, have found their ideal habitat, nesting in the caves. There are therefore many reasons to secure the caves and consequently protect these habitats.
